Cusumano, Andrea (2007) The Funeral of Don Quixote. [Performance]
|Type of Research:||Performance|
'A Funeral for Don Quixote' was written, directed and designed by Andrea Cusumano. The play is based on an adaptation of two novels 'Cosmos' and 'A Premeditated Crime' by Witold Gombrowicz.
The work was the result of an extensive research and development as the result of a collaboration in Poland between the Scenography department at Central Saint Martins and CRIKOTEKA (Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor). This production continued Cusumano's deep interest in Kantor’s concept of theatre and in developing a direct link with this historical work through Mira Rychlicka who played the lead role in the production.
'Funeral…' explores a structure of narrative loops starting in ‘reality’ and ending each time a little bit further into the imaginary. It is a surreal work incorporating impossible transitions and transpositions.
The development of the performance integrated Cusumano's historical research, adaptation of the Gombrowicz novels and a period of improvisation conducted between the established performers from CRICOTEKA and post-graduate students from Central Saint Martins.
