Anita Taylor is the co-founder and director of the ‘Jerwood Drawing Prize Project’, responsible for devising the structure, forum, management and leadership of the only annual open drawing exhibition in the UK. Paul Thomas, also a co-founder, works closely with Anita Taylor, and the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, in development of the project.
This exhibition project promotes, tests, ‘surveys’ and disseminates current values in drawing practice, explores what can be defined as drawing today and establishes those working within the field of drawing in the UK. The project provides a forum for peer and expert review, by an annually appointed expert selection panel, of original drawings submitted by artists resident or domiciled in the UK.
Panels have included Frances Carey, Marco Livingstone, Marina Warner, Cornelia Parker, Ken Currie, Tony Godfrey, Martin Kemp, Catherine de Zegher. Between 2001-07, 47-87 works were selected for each touring show. Since 2001, the ‘Jerwood Drawing Prize’ has included 507 drawings by 433 artists, with a project total (1994-2007) of 868 artists and 1308 drawings, from an overall submission between 2001-07 of 15,500 drawings. Artists have included Ian Davenport, Tom Phillips, and Cathy de Monchaux. An exhibition catalogue containing selectors’ essays, images of each artists’ work, statements and biographies, provides a printed resource for each annual exhibition that tours from the Jerwood Space, London to a minimum of five venues per year.
