| Description: | A presentation by John Wynne and Tim Wainwright at Collaborations, a symposium with photographers and artists using photography whose practice embraces collaboration with the subjects of their work. Transplant is a multi-faceted project undertaken by sound artist John Wynne and photographer Tim Wainwright. It began with a year-long residency at one of the world’s leading centres for heart and lung transplantation, Harefield Hospital. The artists worked directly with staff and patients (often at their bedside), collecting materials and developing ideas which led to a 24-channel installation, a book of essays, a DVD, a half-hour piece for BBC Radio and several other works. “Wainwright and Wynne pick their way across a minefield of colossal emotions, hallucinatory experiences and cutting edge medical technology with great tenderness and delicacy.” (The Wire) The artists will discuss the ethical issues raised by working with ‘vulnerable’ subjects, how patients and staff influenced the direction of their practice and the relevance of their work for both participants and wider audiences. |
