Here is the secret, here is the trick

O'Neill, Alistair (2011) Here is the secret, here is the trick. Vestoj,The Journal of Sartorial Matters (2). pp. 15-19. ISSN 2000-4036

Type of Research: Article
Creators: O'Neill, Alistair
Description:

Article in Vestoj, a new magazine that has as its precis an intellectual exploration of the meaning of vestments. It comes out of Stockholm, under the editoriship of Anja Aronowsky Cronberg (CSM and Royal College of Art London) but has prestigious contributors from through the world of high fashion American Vogue’s Hamish Bowles) and fashion academia (the Fashion Institute of Technology New York’s Dr Valerie Steele) around the globe.

Vestoj stands apart from the current crop of new magazines because of its consciously intellectual stance, and the fact “to remain free in thought” it will not run any advertising. A refreshing addition to any household in which a critical analysis of fashion and dress is as important an issue as the newest Chanel show music.

The relationship between fashion and magic has been intriguing us for quite some time now. The idea occurred to us some time ago, like a bolt of lightning in the head so to speak. It all started with an old copy of the Equinox, Aleister Crowley’s journal, published for the first time in 1905. The journal lead us to start thinking about fashion and magic and how to bring the two together. We started thinking about Sergei Paradjanov and Kenneth Anger and Jodorowsky and Fellini and the clothes they’ve used in the films they’ve made that allude to magic.
