Neue Slowenische Kunst 1984-1992

Smith, Donald (2012) Neue Slowenische Kunst 1984-1992. [Show/Exhibition]

Type of Research: Show/Exhibition
Creators: Smith, Donald
Description:

This was an exhibition of previously unseen archives of the NSK Slovenian art collective widely seen as the last avant-garde movement of the 20th Century. The show included work across visual arts, theatre, music, graphics and architecture, and examined a little known relationship between London and the former Yugoslavia.

This exhibition was in co-operation with Tate Modern and Calvert 22 Gallery, which led to a three part London wide NSK presentation where CHELSEA space focused on the archive material, Calvert 22 showed contemporary work by some of the collective, and Tate Modern hosted a symposium and concert.

Whilst the exhibition dealt with historic material, it raised questions about the NSK movement’s contemporary relevance since the fall of Yugoslavia and the Soviet block. The art of the Balkans is still not widely accepted into the art historical cannon and this exhibition attempted to better understand the critique of totalitarianism from artists within a socialist republic.
