Less Is More: What Design Against Crime Can Contribute To Sustainability

Gamman, Lorraine and Thorpe, Adam (2009) Less Is More: What Design Against Crime Can Contribute To Sustainability. Built Environment, 35 (3). pp. 403-418. ISSN 0263-7960

Type of Research: Article
Creators: Gamman, Lorraine and Thorpe, Adam
Description:

Crime compromises the objectives of sustainable development. It does this in many ways that harm both the victims and the communities who experience crime, or who become embroiled in negative crime lifecycles linked to addiction and other marginalizing issues. Even insurance replacement of stolen or damaged items, for example, increases levels of consumerism that are unsustainable. Additional to the ecological costs of crime are the social and economic impacts of courts, cops and corrections money better spent on building democratic and sustainable communities. This paper outlines the user and abuser centred methodology of the Design Against Crime Research Centre (DACRC) at the University of Arts London which delivers sustainable and socially responsive design. It argues that DACRC's approach is unique. It addresses social agendas by accommodating consideration of multiple, often competing, user-demands in a given context, and responding in ways which produce co-designed briefs and both fiscal and social capital through sustainable design.
