Sea Chair

Jones, Kieren and Murakami, Azusa and Groves, Alexander (2011) Sea Chair. [Art/Design Item]

Type of Research: Art/Design Item
Creators: Jones, Kieren and Murakami, Azusa and Groves, Alexander
Description:

The Sea Chair Project merges craft, industry and design and looks to harness the struggling fishing industry to produce a series of chairs created from plastic collected at sea.

The first Sea Chair made from collected waste plastic from Porthtowan Beach, Britain’s most polluted micro plastic beach, was launched in 2012 at Milan Design Week.

The Project evolved as a result of research carried out into the levels of plastic waste in our oceans and seas.
Wishing to raise awareness of ever growing phenomena such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a gyre of plastic that spans twice the size of the United States, the Sea Chair Project was conceived to bring this message to a broad audience.

In addition to the ecological impacts that were investigated the project also proposed a social strand that looked at the dying fishing industry in the UK and ways that it could be harnessed and brought back to life.

Sea Chair is now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana.
