Urban Landscape and Memory

Collaborative exhibition by staff rom BA Fine Art CSM and Facultad de Bellas Artes, Universidad del Pais Vasco. This exhibition brings together five artists whose practice explores the experience of living in the city. The exhibition asserts the importance of constantly re-examining the conditions of urban life in the light of new and changing technologies, and in the context of migrations of people, resources and capital in a globalised Europe. The exhibition also suggests that old technologies such as drawing with pencil on paper not only continue to have a function, but can add value as subjective experience is related to the complex challenge of representing the contemporary world. The city as a subject is approached both with a knowledge coming from direct encounter as well as from a mediated distance. The five artists in the exhibition refer outwards to everyday experiences of urban life but at the same time inward with ambiguity and apprehension. Their material is drawn from direct experience, but acknowledges the mediating and distorting filters of imagination and memory.
