Time, Movement and Duration

Newth, Martin (2005) Time, Movement and Duration. [Art/Design Item]

Type of Research: Art/Design Item
Creators: Newth, Martin
Description:

I was invited to take part in an AiR Artist in Residence scheme at BCA gallery in Bedford. During the three month residency I embarked on an ongoing research project looking at the relationship between time, movement and duration and how these are recorded with photography. Familiar spaces have been photographed with extremely long exposure times, subverting the intended function of contemporary photographic technology to record the split-second moment. Photographs have included a series of ‘Rush Hour’ images, where busy roads or London Underground escalators have been recorded over the entire period of Rush Hour. The length of the exposure renders the cars or commuters invisible as their movement is too fast to be recorded by the slowed down photographic exposure. The busy spaces appear to be empty inviting the viewer to look more closely at the often overlook spaces. Only a faint trace is recorded of the passing travellers. The outputs have included a solo exhibitions (at BCA Gallery, Bedford, 2005) and a group exhibition at the Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool, which brought together 5 artists whose work deals with time and the relationship between the still and the moving image.
