Kubrick's Lost Prologue, in Beyond 2001

McGrady, Patrick (2018) Kubrick's Lost Prologue, in Beyond 2001. [Show/Exhibition]

Type of Research: Show/Exhibition
Creators: McGrady, Patrick
Description:

Film installation and exhibit investigating the unseen documentary Prologue to Stanley Kubrick’s film '2001: A Space Odyssey'. Exhibited as part of the 2018 'Beyond 2001' show at London College of Communication, marking the 50th anniversary of Kubrick's film.

The project grows out of materials held in the Kubrick Archive at LCC, including interview transcripts and associated documents connected to Kubrick’s intention to begin his film with a documentary prologue featuring interviews with leading scientists of the 1960s. The researcher devised and created 6 short films (total running time 11 minutes) inspired by the transcripts, each exploring different techniques for visualising the abstract, intangible or complex ideas expressed in the interviews (including live action, archive film, animation, kinetic typography etc).

The films played as an installation, accompanied by information panels detailing the context in which the original interviews were created.

The project also has a collaborative dimension, drawing on the work of staff, students and recent graduates from LCC’s animation, design and film & TV courses.
