Voorsanger, Jessica (2002) TV Swansong. [Art/Design Item]

Type of Research: Art/Design Item
Creators: Voorsanger, Jessica
Description:

‘TV Swansong’ was a group exhibition held on the internet, curated by Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie. The year long project culminated in a live broadcast of the 'television' inspired projects on the 20th of March 2002 to an enormous audience ranging from designated art venues across the country to an audience watching from their homes, works and universities on broadband. The exhibition included Jordan Baseman, Giorgio Sadotti and Zoe Walker and was a collaboration with the BBC children’s programme ‘SMart’.

The project thematically explored television and its relevance within a technologically changing world. Voorsanger chose to specifically explore children's 'art making' programmes (e.g. ‘Vision On’ with Tony Hart) looking at the medium's reciprocality for both the children and the programmes themselves, achieved through the competitions that are usually associated with them.

Within this project creating, editing and airing a 'TV Programme' on the Internet was a new development. Her contribution to TV Swansong consisted of a film that incorporated a kids art project designed for SMart, the SMart episode that was filmed at The Leytonstone Centre for Contemporary Art (the gallery space Voorsanger runs with Bob & Roberta Smith), an interview with Voorsanger about her practice, ending with a live broadcast where the winners of the competition Voorsanger advertised on SMart were interviewed by Matthew Collings in her sub-project: 'The Turner Prize for Kids'. The episode for SMart was broadcast within its regular programming schedule and has since been repeated several times.

The project also held a two day conference at the Baltic Art Centre in Birmingham where Voorsanger was a panellist discussing her practice, the collaboration with SMart and television as a medium.

A catalogue was produced for the exhibition - TV Swansong, published by ARTicle Press, 2002 (ISBN: 1-873352-58-1).
