NOTHING

Skipper, Hayley (2001) NOTHING. [Show/Exhibition]

Type of Research: Show/Exhibition
Creators: Skipper, Hayley
Description:

Curated by Ele Carpenter and Graham Gussin, the exhibition ‘NOTHING’ showed how artists from the 1960s to 2002 have been occupied with negotiating nothingness and the void. Initiated at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art in Sunderland, the exhibition toured from the Rooseum Centre for Contemporary Art, Malmo, Sweden to the Mead Gallery, Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry, UK.

Skipper was invited to exhibit two works, 'Letting go of the ashes of a newspaper that was bought at Victoria Station and burnt on Brighton beach', and 'Blindspot'. Skipper’s works explored the public realm as a site for live interventions or actions purposefully documented partially through photography and exhibited in the form of poster pieces presented in the gallery space. These ephemeral interventions offered a poetic meditation on the life-cycle analysis of our everyday, revisiting and extending strategies employed by an earlier generation of artists also included in the exhibition, in particular Douglas Huebler, Yves Klein, Lawrence Weiner and Nancy Holt & Robert Smithson.

Other contemporary practitioners exhibited in NOTHING included Martin Creed, Keith Tyson, Francis Alys, Pierre Bismuth and Ceal Floyer.

The exhibition was widely reviewed and was financially supported by the Arts Council of England, Northern Arts, the City of Sunderland and the European Regional Development Fund.
