Myth, Magic and Masquerade Balls: Exploring McQueen through a Cultural and Historical Lens

Willson, Jacki (2015) Myth, Magic and Masquerade Balls: Exploring McQueen through a Cultural and Historical Lens. In: Extreme McQueen: How to Wear Accessories, 13 June 2015, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK.

Type of Research: Conference, Symposium or Workshop Item
Creators: Willson, Jacki
Description:

This lecture historically contextualizes Alexander McQueen's use of accessories. The 'Savage Beauty' exhibition (V&A, 14 March – 2 August 2015) is explored in relation to specific historical accessories within the V&A's permanent collection. A 16th century Venetian fan was firstly discussed in order to draw out its relationship to carnival, the European masked ball and London's pleasure gardens and to expand on questions of identity, play and sensuality. A discussion of the mask or bauta was then developed into a discussion of how accessories have been used around the world historically to promote women's social and political power. A wooden mask, for instance, has been used by the Sande people in Liberia as part of a dance or 'masquerade', where women can negotiate their social position within the tribe. Finally McQueen's idea of armour is developed further. An early 19th century Nepalese ceremonial necklace, and a 15th century Burmese ceremonial helmet are referenced to expand on this idea of protection and the way that accessories have been used to shield and empower the woman who wears them.
