Mirage

Harrison, Elizabeth and Marshall, Chris (2002) Mirage. [Show/Exhibition]

Type of Research: Show/Exhibition
Creators: Harrison, Elizabeth and Marshall, Chris
Description:

'Mirage' was an invited collaboration in a 2 person (Liz Harrison and Chris Marshall) international exhibition. This exhibition coincided with Manifesta 2002, Frankfurt. This exhibition was one of a series of exchange exhibitions between artists' group A2 Arts and international artists to APT Gallery, London.

Two linked site specific installations were made for the two intriguing interconnecting spaces. This was a painting installation that utilised concepts surrounding the mirroring of urban and rural, bringing Deptford to Aschaffenburg, and vice versa.

The 12 paintings were on the theme of 'Urban Puddles'. The puddles encapsulated the ambiguities and dualities of the grey and bland qualities of the urban everyday, yet at the same time through the nature of light and reflection, revealed the transience and mystery of the world around us. The environment within which the installation was shown was one of formal architecture and landscape, and it was this opposing quality that was mirrored and reflected within the images of the grey puddles, in stark contrast to the misfit urban images. Architecture and space were important considerations for both artists, and the identity and characteristics of the building influenced the work produced.

Work from this exhibition was later shown by invitation in 'Creek', work made in response to Deptford Creek, showing at two venues on Creekside, The Gallery at APT, and Framework Gallery. June 5 - 15. 2003. Fellow artists included Victoria Rance and Sheila Volmer. This exhibition was also shown at the River and Rowing Museum, 14 Jan - 27 Feb 2005.

Artist Statement:

"I see myself as an interdisciplinary artist, with a background in painting. My practice continues to seek the definition and articulation of ideas concerning space with current work focusing on elements of landscape. Visual narratives inherent within the work, create a dialogue that explore disparate sites as the home, the city, the countryside. Concerns within my practice are to do with sense of place and an awareness and discovery of how we realise and occupy space both in the present day real time and in our spatial and associative memories of the past. The work fluctuates from micro to macro. A variety of eclectic media, images and processes are employed simultaneously, in response to diverging and seemingly unrelated subject matter. What pulls the work together are the underlying concepts: the tentative relationships that individuals have with their surroundings; the everyday repetitious, mundane habitual activities that inform our perceptions. Themes of landscape, architecture, body, are recurrent within my work, and evolve from personal and generic experiences of past and present spaces, re-established through spatial siting and orientation."
