How's My Driving

Ocean, Humphrey (2003) How's My Driving. [Show/Exhibition]

Type of Research: Show/Exhibition
Creators: Ocean, Humphrey
Description:

My exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery in the summer of 2003 was the culmination of being artist-in-residence at London’s oldest public gallery in 2002. I spent a year making geographical connections with the location of the Gallery in his local south London area. The Linbury Room at Dulwich became my studio, open to visitors every Friday and where I delivered a lecture ‘My South London’ in September, 2002. During the residency I explored the relationship of the role of the contemporary practitioner to their geographic and historical context, and attempted to redefine possible relationships with cultural institutions. The work I produced during this research period attempted to further debates as to the function of the artist residency concept and explored definitions of the local within an international context.. The exhibition itself formed the subject of a front page article by Nick Hornby in The Independent on Sunday 13 July 2003; further articles included Rachel Campbell Johnston in The Times 2 August; Derwent May in The Times 13 August; and David Frazer Jenkins in the British Art Journal Vol 4 No 3 Autumn 2003. Both the poster and catalogue for the exhibition were designed by Gordon House, the catalogue for the exhibition of the related works contains an essay by the Director, Desmond Shawe-Taylor. On 14 November there was a related lunchtime event in the Artists and Critics series: ‘Painter Humphrey Ocean in conversation with Colin Wiggins’ in the Sainsbury Wing Theatre, National Gallery, London.
