Camberwell Space: a new public gallery at Camberwell College of Arts

Camberwell Space reopens in January 2018 in a new, purpose-built gallery space at Camberwell College of Arts’ Peckham Road site, next door to the South London Gallery. Working in collaboration with leading artists, designers and curators, the gallery will initiate original, internationally significant exhibitions providing new perspectives on current debates in contemporary art, design and craft.

The public programme will launch on Thursday 18 January 2018 with a major exhibition exploring drawing practice and teaching at Camberwell College of Arts, titled 'A History of Drawing'. Curated by artist and educator Kelly Chorpening it will feature work by artists including Edward Ardizzone, Wendy Smith, Euan Uglow and Matthew Ritchie, alongside work by recent graduates and current teaching staff. Future exhibitions include a community-facing project with international artist Faisal Abdu’Allah, selected by Hew Locke. This is followed by an exhibition exploring the relationship between contemporary making and language curated by Maiko Tsutsumi, featuring makers from the UK and Japan. A new publication and a series of events will accompany each exhibition.

Part of a major investment by UAL of over £62million into the regeneration of Camberwell College of Arts and its adjoining land, this new gallery offers members of the public the opportunity to engage with the College’s work to create positive social impact through an innovative and original programme of world-leading art and design exhibitions that will be complemented by events, including artist talks, performances, lectures, symposia and workshops.

The development of Camberwell College of Arts is the first major work on the College for a generation, creating a new academic extension which houses a 262-seater lecture theatre, studios and library alongside major alterations to the front façade of the College’s 1969 building on Peckham Road, creating a new fully-accessible entrance and reception in addition to the new Camberwell Space gallery. Brand new UAL student accommodation has also been built on site to further enhance the campus feel.

Camberwell Space is the public gallery at Camberwell College of Arts. Presenting high quality, internationally-significant exhibitions and events in collaboration with leading artists, designers and curators, the programme reflects and extends the curriculum taught at the College. Housed in a new, purpose built space, the gallery offers our community the opportunity to engage with an original exhibition programme that provides new perspectives on current debates in contemporary art, design and craft.
