Futures in Fashion: Modest Fashion Practices and Influence

While the secularisation debate continues to form the bedrock of the sociology of religion’s agenda, its most important lesson is that one’s position depends on one’s understanding of what "religion" is. This collection establishes some foundational aspects of the sub-discipline of the Sociology of Religion and then envisions its future in terms of the gains to be made by looking beyond religion’s institutional and doctrinal shell towards a kernel of meaning-making practices.

The book is divided into four sections, with each section containing one "foundational" chapter written by an established academic that is then followed by two "futures" chapters contributed by emerging scholars in the field. These chapters complement one another by providing a comprehensive survey of the development of the sociology of religion as well as a blueprint for future directions of study. Topics discussed in these chapters include lived religion, sexuality, ritual, religion and the media, and others besides.
