Description: | This essay comes out of a performative-lecture delivered at The Sea is History symposium that took place at the Haus der Kunst in Munich in 2017, to coincide with the Frank Bowling: Mappa Mundi exhibition, and was re-written as an essay for the Frank Bowling solo exhibition at Tate Britain in London (31 May - 26 August 2019). It considers the painterly processes inherent in Bowling's repertoire of surface textures and his expansive fields of colour that invoke a sense of the sea and a transatlantic history. |
