God is bored of us II

Reid, Clunie (2005) God is bored of us II. [Show/Exhibition]

Type of Research: Show/Exhibition
Creators: Reid, Clunie
Description:

Invited to participate in this group exhibition by artist David Fryer and artist and commercial photographer Robert Montgomery (Dazed and Confused magazine), Reid was one of 16 artists selected for 'God is bored of us II'

Enabling Reid to further investigate the visual languages of other artists who produce work from collections of ‘types’ of images from popular culture and their reproduction in various types of series, such as John Baldessari, Richard Prince and John Waters, she explored ideas of revealing currents of desire through repetition developed by these artists. Reid develops this further by finding an organizing strategy where some sense of the material could be made, while maintaining the chaos of the original body of work, rather than using an editing process that is concerned with emphasizing a single visual theme. Reid inhabits a complexity within the work, rather than ordering it from the outside.

Exhibiting 17 photographic pieces and a large double photocopy piece, the photographic pieces consisted of arrangements of groups of two and mostly four photographs of images from her own archive. Their arrangement was loosely derived from a game on the TV show ‘Have I got news for you’ where the contestant has to guess the ‘Odd one out’ of four images. In Reid’s arrangements this allowed for games of similarity and difference in the reading of a number of seemingly arbitrarily arranged images and provided a necessary organisational logic. There was also a large double photocopy work of a defecating dog and a sign in a chocolate shop.

The exhibition was reviewed in Time Out by Sally O'Reilly. Other artists exhibited included Tracey Emin, James White, Jeremy Shaw, Maya Hayuk, Matthew Stone, Payam Sharifi, Dave Dorrell, David Fryer, Sarah Lucas, Robert Montgomery, Marcus Werner Hed, Gary Fairfull, Craig Cooper, Kevin Heavey, Sami Khan/Maharishi.
