Type of Research: Art/Design Item
Creators: Thomas, Paul
Description:

Thomas was invited to undertake the 'Residency in Drawing' at the National Art School Sydney (NAS) and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service alongside Anita Taylor, as co-authors of Drawing (Cassell Illustrated, 2003) from October 2004 - January 2005. Thomas undertook further research visits during 2005 and 2006-07 to complete the development of the work for the exhibtion 'Myths Down Under' in March 2007.The studio/residence situated within the National Park at Middle Head, Sydney Harbour, afforded Thomas the opportunity to respond to this new context, and to examine the relationship of myth, narrative and history through an extensive sequence of drawings that were also developed into a series of 12 paintings. The works examined the exploration of place in the context of his previous work re-interpreting Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey, through the transposition of these first european narratives, travel, diaspora and colonialism, and the current political context. An interim exhibition at Middle Head (December 2004) was followed by a final public exhibition of 36 selected drawings in 2007, in the new NAS Galleries. The catalogue also included the completed paintings and an interview with Taylor. 'Myths Down Under'was reviewed in the Sydney Morning Herald by John McDonald; with drawings subsequently shown at the Royal West of England Academy; and A Slice of Desert selected by Sir Peter Blake, Jason Brooks, Ann Bukantas, Tracey Emin and Andrea Rose for the John Moores 24, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
