Description: | In 2017/18, academic staff and students from BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design participated in Changing Mindsets. The project aimed to narrow attainment gaps in black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and those from working class backgrounds by reducing stereotype threat and implicit bias as barriers to students’ success. In Contextual and Theoretical Studies sessions, students reflected on these two mindsets in seminars, blog posts and essays. In attempting to create Growth Mindsets through an inclusive curriculum, all students regardless of their protected characteristics speak and are spoken to, are visible, present and in focus. I exhibited a ‘Ghostbusters Antholozine’ is a 40 page, A5 photocopied publication containing 15 blog posts and essays, which represents a quarter of the total number of students who wrote about stereotype threat. All first-year (17/18) BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design students are listed in the zine, and names of the students’ whose work is published are underlined, however their work is not directly identifiable as I wanted the reader to focus on the content and not form any opinions about the author’s identity. This exhibition formed the Design School's contribution to the London Design Festival. |
