Description: | Designing for circular economies is an emerging field of research and practice that builds on sustainable design principles, by focusing attention around the recyclability of a material or product, often supported - or sometimes replaced by - a new service offer which operates within new systems or models. These blue cards were created by the researcher after a long period of design practice research and action research - which involved working with many Swedish, UK and US designers and brands, as well as making novel prototypes. The cards draw forward and reframe much of the thinking from THE TEN, but add new elements that relate to design decisions that achieve materials/products/services fit for future circular economies. Circular Design Innovation Framework - Circular design requires us to collaborate and join forces to ensure we can ‘complete the circle’. This means we need to work on creating shared visions and targets from the outset, as there are a lot of changes and decisions to make. What users do with the ‘stuff’ they own is important – we need to think in new ways about design to enable acquisition, use and end-of-life behaviours to. It can help to look through the lenses of material systems; production, business and social models; and user mindsets and habits. Design for Recycling - Designing with the end in mind steers our material, product or service down a particular reprocessing or regeneration route. It could be mechanical, chemical or bio-degradation – what we make at the outset needs to know where it’s heading. Design for Circular Speeds - Understanding more about the things we make, why and how people use them, stop using them, and how they get rid of them, is key to creating circular economies. It’s important that we make things last for as long as possible. It’s also important that we rethink how some products may need to travel quickly through our lives. These cards can be downloaded for free and used (along with personalised inspirational case studies) to support new learning, professional growth, and entrepreneurial activity with a wide range of audiences. |
