1960s Model Girl: Between Ordinary/Extraordinary

McDowell, Felice (2024) 1960s Model Girl: Between Ordinary/Extraordinary. In: LCF Sampled x Research: The ‘Ordinary Girl’, 4 December 2024, London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London.

Type of Research: Conference, Symposium or Workshop Item
Creators: McDowell, Felice
Description:

This paper speaks to and reflects upon the emergence of the 1960s Model Girl and her cultural significance in post-war Britain and fashion.

In drawing attention to the seemingly innocent nomenclature of the 1960s Model Girl (poetics) I point to the politics of the ‘ordinary’ as it works in the positioning of cultural identities (power).

In this way the 1960s Model Girl is a type of ‘Ordinary Girl’ and is therefore also a site of both stability and transformation.

The discursive formation/s of the 1960s Model Girl are both product of and productive in historical narratives; across ever-shifting economic, technological, and political landscapes; concern nation, race, class, cultures and diaspora.
