| Description: | ‘METAHORROR’is an evolving constellation of artworks, events and exhibitions. Each element is interrelated, an accumulative exploration of metanarrative potentialities through experimentation with the conventions of genre fiction. By extending these approaches to contemporary art practice, the project aims at fostering new narrative modes in experimental moving image, performance and mixed media installation. In the process it pulls into focus a broader ongoing enquiry into genre fiction and relationships between art, entertainment and esoteric thought. While a number of recent practices, curatorial initiatives and writing have applied complex interpretative lenses to the subject of horror (Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard, Charlie Fox), this project uses formal mechanisms at play within the genre as a jumping off point for experimental enquiry. The starting point for Metahorror was a brief to 7 contributors in December 2022, establishing parameters for a process of collaborative enquiry, leading to interim public outcomes incorporating moving image, performance and sculptural installation at the Lethaby Gallery as part of 'Vestibule' (January 2023)and at BOTH Gallery (March / April 2024). A further iteration at The Good Rice in January 2025 (as part of 'Campfire')incorporated collaborative work by an additional 8 participants, developed in response to a brief structured around the idea of ‘found footage’ horror. The durational live event and workshop 'Is This a Horror Movie?' (January 2026, CND) extended the project's lines of enquiry through structured improvisation, using props, descriptive text and simple performative acts to generate scenarios. |
