Reflection as Pedagogical Architecture in Enterprise Education: Towards a Conceptual Reframing

Gowing, Beki (2026) Reflection as Pedagogical Architecture in Enterprise Education: Towards a Conceptual Reframing. In: Learning, Teaching & Student Experience 2026, 18-19 May 2026, Manchester.

Type of Research: Conference, Symposium or Workshop Item
Creators: Gowing, Beki
Description:

This research explores how reflective practice functions within enterprise education. Reflection is explored not only as a discrete skill and competency, but also as part of the pedagogical architecture through which learners exercise judgement, and interpret experience under conditions of uncertainty. Entrepreneurship is inherently uncertain, and so enterprise education must equip learners to interpret ambiguous contexts and make decisions when there is no definitive ‘correct’ answer.

Empirical frequency and pattern analysis of enterprise teaching embedded within Level 4-6 creative curricula over five academic cycles is presented as the starting point for this conceptual reframing. Across the dataset, reflective processes consistently appeared as the connective tissue through which other enterprise competencies were introduced, practised, and made meaningful. This suggests reflective processing may operate as an integrative component of enterprise-oriented learning.

Although the value of reflective practice is widely discussed within the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and enterprise education, it is often framed instrumentally (as a technique or skill to develop) or operationally (as a specific, measurable activity). This research instead explores reflection as an iterative interpretive process through which learners make sense of experience, exercise judgement and reconsider assumptions.
