| Description: | Atlantic Sounds (multi-screen installation, 15 monitors) Atlantic Ocean Sounds works as a companion piece to Changes in Light (Macdonald, Moving image, 2024: 18m 34). It is a durational installation that focuses on the colonial legacies that remain instilled in the materials of many libraries and archives. It was made in response to a conversation with Marilyn Clarke, head librarian of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London, where she remarked that the movement of the shelf winding mechanisms made her think of enslaver ships. The installation produces an immersive environment of changing light, washes of sound, and repeating patterns of synchronous and asynchronous waves of movement. Viewers move between screens and fragments that carry echoes of colonial violence that are felt rather than directly shown. |
