Type of Research: Book
Creators: Bari, Shahidha and Athill, Charlie and McCauley Bowstead, Jay
Description:

Global Masculinities and Dress: Style, Practice and Image brings together a multi-disciplinary cohort of fashion practitioners, collectors, researchers and visual culture theorists to explore men’s dress, style and self-presentation from a global perspective. Comprising eleven chapters, including two visual essays, and a critical introduction to decentring men’s fashion, the book explores the history of Pashayi kameez to the politics of Paraguayan hairstyles, moving from Botswana to Britain in order to illuminate the specificities of fashion systems in their respective regions. In their essays, the various contributors trace global networks of influence and exchange, and they argue that in taking a decentred approach to fashion scholarship, we might find different connections across national and regional borders, identifying men’s style as a transcultural set of practices. Handsomely illustrated, the book is intended for researchers, teachers and students alike, offering a vital intervention by reorienting fashion toward a more global and inclusive perspective. From the influence of Korean popular culture on Central Asian fashion to the reimagining of the American cowboy in Botswana, and the aesthetic migrations of textiles from South Asia to North Africa, Global Masculinities and Dress reveals a complex web of global interconnections shaping men’s style.
