Colours of Seasons

Since the introduction of synthetic dyes during the Industrial Revolution, pre-industrial natural dye techniques gradually declined in favour of synthetic alternatives that offered more vibrant, more stable, and more affordable colours. Today, amongst the rising awareness of the health hazards and pollution caused by the global fashion and textile industry, natural dyes are seeing a revived interest from artists, designers, and researchers, connected in a renewed appreciation of their beauty, cultural significance, and sustainability potential.

Colours of Seasons was a collaboration between the World in Colour season of public programmes, produced by the Ashmolean Museum and the Everything is Connected season, produced by the Humanities Cultural Programme, University of Oxford.

The display included an invited research exhibit from Dr. Burcikova's Life in Clothes Fellowship, alongside the work of her collaborator, the natural dyer Kate Turnbull.
