Kimono Dreams

The making and wearing of kimono in Japan has always operated under an entirely different fashion system from the west. A stable, simple form, all the attention is directed onto the surface of the fabric as an evolutionary canvas upon which changes in society and evolving taste are reflected. This chapter reflects on kimono's influence on the west from the late 19th century to the present day and illustrates how contemporary designers have explored its infinite potential for adaptation and individual expression.
