The Impact of Mentoring on Mentors [case study]

This case study explores a realisation of how much of a gift a process of mentoring can be for a mentor, creating space for self-reflection, development and growth. When PGCert participants are mentored to develop their learning and teaching into reflective practice, this can become a transformative process. The case study argues that, similarly, the mentoring process has transformative potential for mentors. Exploring personal mentoring interactions, the author reflects on the impact mentoring has on mentors through three lenses: 1) of alignment between mentor and mentee, 2) of disagreement between mentor and mentee, and 3) of reflection. The case study concludes that in that moment, the focus is on the mentee and their development; however, it is argued that the mentor is also impacted, and this impact is worth exploring. As a mentor, acknowledging and engaging with this impact opens up new areas of discovery and leads to a more nuanced awareness and sense of self.
