| Description: | Fluid Protocols examines the contemporary gay sauna as a para-domestic architectural environment through the intersecting lenses of architectural phenomenology and queer phenomenology. Rather than understanding the sauna primarily as a site of sexuality, the paper considers how atmosphere, materiality and spatial protocols organise encounters, belonging and embodied experience. Drawing on observations, spatial analysis and phenomenological reflection, it explores how heat, humidity, darkness, sound and material surfaces produce conditions that mediate intimacy, anonymity and social interaction. The paper argues that these environments operate through tacit spatial codes that are learned through movement, orientation and sensory experience rather than explicit instruction. By positioning atmosphere as an active spatial condition, the research contributes to broader discussions surrounding interior architecture, sensory environments and queer spatial practices. It proposes the sauna as a significant yet underexamined architectural typology through which to reconsider the relationships between space, embodiment, identity and the production of social belonging. |
