Re-Seed Asia: The Future of East Asian Fashion & Cultural Exchange

The Hands-on Cultural Workshops formed a central part of Re-Seed Asia’s Cultural Exchange Day, supported by the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. Organised and produced by Dr Min-Ji Seo, the workshops brought together students, educators, creative practitioners, and public participants through collaborative activities exploring cultural heritage, craftsmanship, sustainability, and material practice.

The workshops were contributed by Eunju Macmahon and Claudine Rousseau from London College of Fashion, Sayaka Kamakura from Bunka Gakuen University, and Jo Chen from Fu Jen Catholic University. Each contributor introduced creative perspectives shaped by their cultural, educational, and disciplinary contexts, enabling participants to encounter a range of East Asian and UK approaches to craft, fashion, and collaborative practice.

As part of Re-Seed Asia’s Cultural Exchange Day, Eunju from London College of Fashion contributed a hands-on Jogakbo workshop exploring Korean cultural heritage through textile practice, sustainability, and collaborative making.

Jogakbo, the Korean tradition of wrapping and joining pieces of fabric, was introduced not only as a craft technique but also as a cultural practice connected to care, resourcefulness, reuse, and everyday life. Through practical guidance and material experimentation, Eunju enabled participants to engage directly with Korean textile culture and to consider how traditional knowledge can be reinterpreted within contemporary creative practice.

Her workshop created an accessible environment in which participants from different cultural and educational backgrounds could learn through making. By working with fabric, colour, composition, and reuse, participants exchanged ideas and personal perspectives while developing an understanding of Bojagi’s cultural and sustainable significance.

Eunju’s contribution was central to transforming cultural exchange from passive observation into active participation. The workshop demonstrated how Korean heritage can be shared through touch, process, and collective creativity, allowing participants to build connections beyond linguistic and cultural differences.

Within the wider Re-Seed Asia programme, the Bojagi workshop contributed to cultural diplomacy by creating a direct encounter between Korean cultural practice and international audiences. It positioned craft as a form of cultural communication through which heritage, sustainability, and contemporary design could be explored collectively.
