For her recent series of text-based site-specific drawings, Bryniarska has developed a custom typography using a set of simple measuring devices that explore text through diagrammatic and concrete form. The artworks ‘yeah no’ and ‘but hey’ address specific words and phrases as rhetorical devices where communication and intention has become uncertain or ambivalent. Occurring at moments of verbal exchange where power is undecided, these were partly derived from Bryniarska’s conversations with her son as he learned how to speak. For the artist, this inbuilt self-reflexivity drew parallels with questions of artistic agency, production and exchange, how and why art is produced and for whom.

'yeah no' speaks of a gap in language and communication.
'yeah no' signals uncertainty and ambivalence.
'yeah no' is what my three-year-old son says to me when he is seeking, but not sure of, our concord.
'yeah no' means that the decision is unmade, in abeyance, tbc. 'yeah no' is a set of power relations.
