| Description: | Digital Natives is a series of 3D-printed sculptural works begun in 2012 that explores the translation of everyday physical objects through digital imaging, custom software and additive manufacturing. Objects such as detergent bottles and watering cans are captured using photogrammetry and then transformed through algorithms that distort, abstract and recolour their geometry before being fabricated as colour 3D prints. The project uses two custom software tools developed in Processing: co_former, a parametric reshaping tool used to transform scanned geometries, and ccc, a parametric colouring tool used to generate and alter surface colour. Together, these tools treat software not simply as a means of production but as an active part of the work's formal and conceptual development. The resulting objects retain traces of their source material while becoming new computationally mediated forms, foregrounding the movement between physical objects, digital representation and fabrication. Digital Natives was included in Imprimer le monde at Centre Pompidou in 2017, an exhibition examining the impact of digital fabrication on contemporary artistic and design practice. Later that year, three works from the series were acquired for the permanent collection of the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou. The acquisition was followed by further presentations of the work within Centre Pompidou collection contexts, including KANAL – Centre Pompidou in Brussels, Centre Pompidou × West Bund in Shanghai, and the permanent collection galleries in Paris. The sequence of exhibition, acquisition and subsequent collection presentations provides evidence of sustained institutional recognition of the work. |
