Photography and the archive research centre core members exhibition

The exhibition is of research carried out by core members of the Photography and the Archive Research Centre.

Established in 2004, the Photography and the Archive Research Centre is active in commissioning new projects involving both practice-based and historical research with the subject area of the archive.

PARC is concerned with a range of important questions related to photographic archives and the ways in which cultural practitioners respond to them. PARC acts as a catalyst for practice-based research alongside academic scholarship. This rich vein of work relates to an expanding field of both creative and scholarly activity focusing on the ways in which the meanings and values of images and objects can be determined by the systems within which they are collected and displayed. Ranging from academic discourse around 'new museology' to artist's site-specific interventions in archives and museum displays, this activity has subjected the culture of collecting to new scrutiny and prominence. Partly as a result of this attention, the archive and the collection have been reconceptualised and have attained new and poetic associations, particularly in relation to the narratives of private and collective memory.
