Type of Research: Art/Design Item
Creators: Thorogood, Simon
Description:

SoundWear is a work in progress software for an active fashion design tool/audience interactive installation. It is collaborative research project concerned with forging dynamic design links with Music, musicians and composers. The principal focus is to derive fashion ideas, forms, shapes, colours, patterns and textures, directly from played music. It works by assessing the characteristics of a sequence of music, such as loudness or amplitude and links these to a set of visual motifs from a library of personal drawings, images and photographs.

As a selected piece of music plays, the program assesses a particular piece of music and matches it with a particular visual motif that best ‘describes’ the sound. The resulting evolving visual arrangements are then projected and become the basis of a fashion idea or sketch, which can then be pursued in more conventional terms.
