Description: | This presentation focused on recent events within contemporary art and broader issues around cultural appropriation, authenticity, and cultural copyright. Using recent work produced by the artist (Sensing Obscurity I, II, III), the historical example of 18th century 'chinoiserie' is mapped against contemporary music production, architectural appropriations (China's Hallstatt project, 2012) and the reclamation gestures of the 2013 Christie's Chinese Zodiac head auction, and Ai Wei Wei's Animal Circle). The presentation was given as part of the 'Para Site International Conference 2013', Hong Kong. The conference focus was: "New internationalisms after multiculturalism Contemporary art after global expansion". |
