Confinement

Harrison, Elizabeth (2005) Confinement. [Art/Design Item]

Type of Research: Art/Design Item
Creators: Harrison, Elizabeth
Description:

The research for this particular project has included a number of issues: Site specific installation; Body as object; physical and mental states in relation to everyday life in the institutional habitat; Habits and everyday rituals.

The present visual condition of the architecture of the hospital and associative notions played a strong part in the forming and structuring of the ideas. The space dictated the final outcome. The illusion of space and structure within the space and the utilisation of images on site ,formed the basis of the work.

The former Royal Infirmary, Worcester is in a period of transition. Currently maintained by security services but closed to the general public, it is to be re-developed as the city's university. This architecturally intriguing site is rich in history and holds an important part in local peoples memories. The exhibition as a whole counteracted the perception of the site as an abandoned, potential 'eyesore', reflected upon the hospital's history of care for the body, and prefigured its future care for the mind. It also aroused public interest in contemporary art and risk-taking approaches to urban development.
