The Empty Gallery Interviews

The Empty Gallery Interviews was a series of live conversations held with exhibitors ahead of their exhibitions, between 2009-2011. Set inside empty galleries across the UK, I staged informal interviews that made public the anticipatory dialogue that exists between the exhibitor and the exhibition space.

Talking with each artist or curator about their upcoming show, the Interviews offered an insight into the methodology that informs the artist’s response to the gallery space; tracing their evolving relationship to the space in the lead up to installing the work. Putting into practice a vocal ordering of the visual, the Interviews considered what it might mean to perform or translate the artist’s or the curator's response to the gallery site, in front of an audience.

The Empty Gallery Interviews were initiated in 2009 and began as a collaboration between myself and writer Altair Roelants. Artists and curators who were interviewed over the course of the series include Susan Barnet and Michelle Deignan at Five Years Gallery, London; Ami Clarke at Campbell Works, London, Ana Laura Lopez de la Torre at Gasworks, London; Vanessa Billy at Limoncello, London; Anna-Catharina Gebbers at Zabludowicz Collection, London; Matt Blackler at SHIFT., London; Barry Sykes at Plymouth Arts Centre, Plymouth; Mathieu Copeland at David Roberts Art Foundation, London; and Kelly Large at the Art House Foundation, London.
