Description: | This paper makes the case for the teaching and learning of cultural entrepreneurship in university and community-based education in the Caribbean at a crucial time in the social and economic development and growth of the region and creative economy. According to Nurse (2007), the cultural and creative industries have long been identified as a vital strategic resource in the move towards creating sustainable development for the Caribbean region in job creation, income generation and export earning. However, Nurse, (2007) stated that the lack of education and training in arts administration, management and cultural entrepreneurship have been a hindrance to the development and growth of the sector. Dunn and Thomas, (2013) also identified education and training as deterrent to growth of entrepreneurship in the creative sector. This was the prevailing rationale for the University of the West Indies creating the Master of Arts in Creative Arts Management a the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados to meet the specific needs in Barbados and the region. The entrepreneurship route of the MA programme and the Entrepreneurship and Project Management Artscourse specifically, designed and delivered by the author in the academic years 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 are the focus of this paper. The thematic areas of the first International Conference on Teaching and Learning Cultural Entrepreneurship that it addresses are curriculum design and practitioners critique. |
