Typeform dialogues: archeologies of practice

An invited lecture given at the symposium Éditions numériques: Le temps de l’archéologie (Digital publishing: time for archaeology) which reflected on the positives and negatives of having worked on a publishing project in the 1990s which married CD-ROM technology with typographic research.

« Typeform dialogues » : archéologies de pratiques
La présentation sera centrée sur l’analyse d’un projet numérique interactif qui réunit trois domaines de pratiques graphiques. L’archive initiale qui en constitue la ressource est essentiellement une collection photographique de lettrages typographiques, réunie pour conforter des fragments de l’histoire existante et pour servir de documentation afin d’améliorer les pratiques à venir. L’essentiel du projet numérique (entre 1994 et 1998) visait à explorer les possibilités créatives du design d’interface pour la recherche typographique dans le contexte d’une archive. À partir de ces intentions initiales assez générales, est né le projet de l’édition intitulée «  Typeform dialogues », avec comme objectif d’établir une étude comparée de l’histoire des formes typographiques (1995-2001). Le troisième aspect pratique est celui de ma propre recherche en thèse de doctorat consacrée à la description des formes du langage visuel typographique.

A talk critically presenting one interactive digital project which drew upon three areas of visual practice. The source archive for the project is predominately a photographic collection of lettering practices, established to consolidate existing and fragmented histories and to document and enhance ongoing practice. The core digital project (1994–1998) set out to explore the creative practices of interface design for typographic research within the context of the archive. From this broad starting point emerged the planned digital publication ‘Typeform dialogues’, intended as a comparative survey of type form history and description (1995–2001). The third area of practice is that of my own doctoral research concerned with the description of the visual language of typefaces as forms.
