Jim Dine – Printmaking and the Tools of his Trade

This article draws upon a public conversation between Dine and the author at Chelsea College of Art in London on 25 November 2015. It identifies some of the qualities of prints that are most important to Dine and addresses many of the motifs in his repertoire, especially the one perhaps most closely associated with him, namely tools. The article concludes with a discussion of A History of Communism, Dine’s epic series of 45 lithographs with etching and engraving, completed in 2012.
