Care of the Self

Care of the Self is an international exhibition of artworks by artists from Austria, Japan, and the UK, co-curated by Anne Eggebert and Almut Rink. The exhibition is part of wider arts based research project, Orientation as Gardening, at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, by Carola Platzek, writer theorist, and Almut Rink, artist.

Care of the Self asks how subjectivity imprints itself / is imprinted on narratives, but also how a decisive subjectivisation itself can shape narratives. It is primarily the investigation of self-cultivation techniques and practices: saved in the form of knowledge acquisition which is more than just theory and insight, namely incorporating self-examination, experience, and application.

The idea stems from the classical Greek and partially Roman concept of the “Care for the Self” - a daily ethical practice that tackled the knowledge of and the continuous inspection of the self, and employed to enhance the quality of a community. The exhibition can be read just as well as a kind of garden, which in itself functions formatively, allowing parts of its arrangement to appear compositionally, as individual elements mirror the striving to read underlying circumstances anew.
