Description: | This exhibition investigated painting practice within three generations of artists. In opposition to 1990s exhibitions about painting that stressed notions of expanded painting and ironic approaches to the medium, ‘Must I Paint You a Picture?’ sampled the work of painters whose work showed an almost romantic commitment to the format. Initially, their practice seems to embrace a traditional approach to painting (oil applied on a stretched canvas), and doesn’t claim to transform or expand the medium into the sculptural or architectural disciplines, but equally departs from rigid understandings of the medium typical of a modernist conception. This particular type of practice combines explorations of technique with the discussion of art history and the inclusion of narrative content, shifting the direction of the medium into new territory. |
