Description: | Signal to Noise presents the work of a group of London-based artists whose work engages with delineations of research, truth and knowledge. Each artist has negotiated an individual way to position their work within art’s current entanglement with theory and how these considerations translate into made objects. Some artists in the exhibition use research as an expression of meaning or message, in which a sense of the value of art is an articulation of the mental as being a more authentic experience than the material. Others are concerned with more formal matters with no obvious relationship to the artists' own subjectivity, being occupied by testing technologies, materials and processes. Some reject research altogether as unnecessary ‘noise’ that distracts from art’s ultimately sensual form of truth – the ‘signal’ in art that creates substantial ideas through the processes of looking, thinking and feeling. |
