Road Map

‘Road Map’ explores the intricate relationship between visual representations of landscape and the imaginative act of listening/witnessing. These concerns are explored through the format of a ‘road movie’ in which we listen to a narrated encounter between an Israeli soldier and an arrested Palestinian subject accompanied by video projection of landscape seen through the windscreen of a moving car.

‘Road Map’ pursues current research preoccupations with an ethics of spectatorship and possibilities and limits of intersubjective identification in cultural exchange. The structure of the narrative suggests that the moment of ‘impasse’ in communication/representation could be the signal for the necessity of a new kind of beginning, implicitly arguing that there is a possibility of social change through a shift in personal experience.

This work developed from a preliminary two dimensional photographic ‘sketch’ for the group exhibition ‘No Fixed Position’ at the Lethaby Gallery (2003). The source material then developed as a new video installation ‘Road Map’ exhibited alongside ‘A Question of Distance’ in the exhibition of the same name, Waygood Gallery, Newcastle Upon Tyne (2004).
