Description: | ‘Conditions of Visibility’ is a three screen video projection installation and exhibition of wall mounted prints, part of a larger body of individual work currently being developed under the generic title ‘Shifting Terrains’. The work was first exhibited in the group exhibition ‘Between Land and Sea’ exploring themes linked to the above with UAL colleagues Elwes (Camberwell), Raban (LCC) and Wainwright (CSM) and was supported by the International Centre for Fine Art Research (ICFAR). ’Conditions of Visibility’ is a meditation upon environmental and temporal change in a zone of environmental fragility and industrial activity. The subject is addressed on both a macro and micro scale, and is echoed in the structural composition of the works. The work contributes to a key research thematic: the exploration of the interval between perception and recollection as an event in time (Bergson, Deleuze) manifested as the threshold of visual experience where legibility of the optical image dissolves into a more tactile experience of light. The work was developed as a series of interrelating video projections and wall mounted print installation. Questions of change and durée are explored through multiple sequences projected simultaneously and the still photographs address changes in optical perception across a dispersed visual and spatial field. The work draws attention to issues of interconnectivity, displacement and incommensurability, challenging the duality of the moving to the still image and proposing the notion of the changing image as a materialised intensity. |
