Beyond Orientation - Eight Views

Beyond Orientation - Eight Views is an international exhibition co-curated with artist Almut Rink. The exhibition stems from a two year research project Orientation as Gardening initiated by Almut Rink (with writer Carola Platzek) at the Academy of Fine Art Vienna, which began in Tokyo followed by London (hosted at CSM, UAL). Beyond Orientation - Eight Views brings the project back to Vienna where Rink continues her research and, together with Anne Eggebert as co-curator (and contributing artist), opens the space for an exchange with eight artists from Japan, Singapore, the UK and Vienna.

The Korea Culture House Pavilion at the outskirts of the city hosts the exhibition, providing a space that merges nature and architecture. The invited artists have been asked to respond to the antique idea of a “Care of the Self” that was re-discovered by Foucault - a daily ethical practice that tackled the knowledge of and the continuous inspection of the self, and employed to enhance the quality of a community. Rink's work, eight Assemblage Boards, become supporting structures, framing the other artworks and setting up relationships between them.

Beyond Orientation is primarily the investigation of self-cultivation techniques and practices: saved in the form of knowledge acquisition which is more than just theory and insight, namely incorporating self-examination, experience, and application Questions of orientation, cultivation, care, autonomy and inter-dependence link the works on display.
