Description: | ‘Blind Spot’ was commissioned for 'In the Shadow of “Heroes”' within the 2nd Bishkek International Contemporary Art Exhibition in Kyrgyzstan. Like its neighbouring republics in Central Asia, it is a region involved in political re-creation having experienced almost three quarters of a century of communist dictatorship and the constant pressure of the Cold War. 'In the Shadow of Fallen Heroes' brought together a group of artists of Iranian and Kurdish heritage. 'Blind Spot' is a two monitor installation examining the point of breakdown in surveillance visiting the space beyond the limits of the surveilled. One monitor concentrates on the central surveillance theme; the second has a constant image of the aftermath of a violent event. It explores contemporary surveillance, symbols of power, control and authority but this is slowly undermined as the video progresses. My research examined the systems of control and intelligence gathering employed during the period to 1989 and the politics of surveillance that exists currently through invasive CCTV. The work critiques the use to which such information is put and examines the point of breakdown in communications and the limitations of technology. |
