Don't Tempt Me

This inaugural international Design Against Crime exhibition in 2002 was curated by Gamman et al. and funded by the Design Council, the London Institute, Zeus Studio (Milan, Italy) and Studio O’Flynn (Barcelona, Spain). The main theme of the show was the personal protection of individuals and their homes - and also the protection of customers by corporations through the intelligent use of technology. The exhibition showcased for the first time an extensive range of ingenious products mainly by young British based designers that combined fresh stylish design with simple and effective crime resistant features. The designs proved that anti-crime design can make a difference across a range of design territories, from hi-tech gadgets to wearable tech, from handbags to cafe chairs.

'Don’t Tempt Me' was an exhibition for Salone de Mobile, Milan (2001), funded by the Design Council, to demonstrate what the application of research into Design Against Crime (DAC) could deliver. The exhibition featured my original research into bag theft, the 'In the Bag' CD-Rom, a design resource that was subsequently “reprinted” three times (2001, 2002 and 2005), and which uniquely focussed on secure product design, rather than built environments.

'Don’t Tempt Me' showed at 'Spring Primavera', Barcelona (May 2001), and my bag theft research, now revised and updated, is available to view at www.inthebag.org.uk (2007). 'Don’t Tempt Me' included Stop Thief chairs, which I catalysed (100%) and co-designed (33%). These chairs later featured at subsequent exhibitions, including the 'Safe' exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2005); acquired for MOMA’s permanent collection in 2006.
